Traveling is for the Birds (Not Cats)

Sometimes, I think they don't love me anymore. First, they disappear for 3 months, sticking me with Ben and Jerry - those guys were always playing pranks on me, making it look like I was making a mess, when really, I'm OCD about keeping clean. Then, when I finally get settled in and can deal with all the hissing, they come back and drug me for a week straight until we end up in this very strange new place.

And now, once we've all settled in, they take off again. Something about a baby. Don't they know babies are dumb? They can't even feed themselves or talk. Not like me. I talk a lot. And I'm a ferocious hunter, stalking my food bowl, making sure it can't get away. Although, it might be nice to meet a baby - I could snuggle up to her warm little body, steal some food, maybe steal their breath.

I'm pretty sure these two are getting ready to leave me again. I'm not dumb, I can read the tea leaves on the wall. I see the leaves turning colors and falling off the trees. I see the kids in their silly little costumes, throwing eggs at houses. I feel how cold it's getting - and man, it's getting cold. I know the 'traveling season' is upon us (I think you humans refer to it as the 'Reason for the Season'?).

But the most obvious way I know they're leaving is they introduced me to my 'baby-sitter.' This crazy Chinese chick came over a little while back, and I heard them talking about how to take care of me. Here's how you take care of me: PUT FOOD IN MY DISH AND PET ME! It's really quite easy. Here's what not to do: pull my arms out of my socket and ignore me. I know I'm a cat, so I'm flexible and all nimbily-bimbily, but my arms, they really don't move in that direction so well. Chill out, woman.

So, in order to avoid this crazy woman, I'm going to sleep on this red thing until it's warm out again - I don't know what this thing is, but I know they take it with them whenever they go away. If I just camp out here for the next 2-3 months, they won't be able to go anywhere without taking me. I'm just so lonely here when I'm alone. I get so sad and miss the snuggling with Kimberly. She keeps me warm. And fed too. It's not like I can feed myself. I mean, I am only a cat.

The Magic Shaking Can and the Lie of the White Pills

My world is spinning.

One day, I'm curling up with my buds, Ben and Jerry. The next, it's so hot I can't move and there's boxes everywhere. My life is turning into a mess.

I was having a great time at my new home, finally getting along with Ben after weeks of hissing and posturing. I learned about how tasty potato chips and cheerios are. I got to hang out outside on the porch watching birds and squirrels flutter about and watching clouds float lazily by.

Then my two 'owners' (that still sounds so funny. They 'own' me? Ha!) came back. At first it was just like old times - cuddling, petting, treats. Then things went crazy.

A couple days ago (or maybe weeks ago, who knows anymore), I was having a nice sleep. Then I was awaken by the shaking sounds of the magic can. I should have known something was up; it was still dark out.

Next thing I know, I'm accosted and put in this giant 'truck.' All of a sudden everything is shaking and things are moving by at light speed. I couldn't walk 3 feet. It was all I could do not to throw up all over Kimberly. So I did what any sane cat would do - I crawled under the seat into the warm comfort of the dark.

I kept trying to tell them that I was unhappy and was feeling a little green. I told them over and over and over and over and over and over, but they wouldn't listen.

They tried to pacify me with some treats, the normal yummy ones and some new bad tasting white things. Then everything melted. I couldn't stand. My eyes were glued shut. The world was a blur. I couldn't move, or even talk. I was lost.

Every night, we were holed up in a new cheap, sleazy hotel. Every day, I was tricked into another 'treat'-induced stupor by that damn magic can.

I used to be a respectable cat. Look what they've done to me.

Then when the downward spiral finally stopped, we're in a new, weird place. Boxes everywhere. Heat like you've never felt. No mountains to stare at. Chaos all around.

To show my displeasure, I tried to poop on PEter's (again, with that spelling. Enough already, huh?) clothes, but Kimberly caught me in the act. That was awkward. She wasn't so happy with me, but fortunately she didn't force me to have another white treat.

Things have slowly been settling down. These two finally got the heat under control, thank Garfield. My old bed is back, so I've been spending a lot of time sleeping on that. I have a nice big window where I can watch the birds and some big dumb dogs who are tied up outside (although I feel a little bad since they look real hot - I winder why? It's nice and cool in here).

Overall, things are good. Kimberly's been cuddling lots. PEter's been brushing me. I think this place might be ok.

If not, I'll poop on PEter's pillow.

Are We There Yet?

Another day, another long day of travel. We're heading West to pick up our stuff. Then the real adventure begins.

Tell Miles to get the Purrrr-ing machine warmed up, Kimberly's coming and she's looking for snuggles.

Sometimes, I Smell Them

I wonder where they could be? It's been so long. I wonder if they will ever come back?

I think I'm wearing out my welcome here. I even heard 'Mom' tell that other girl that she can't wait to get rid of me. As long as Ben keeps his distance; I wouldn't want to have to take a chunk of his ear.

I hope they come back for me soon. Sometimes I smell them in the other room and I think they're hanging out in there, but every time I make my break for the room, I get cut off at the pass. I hope this isn't some elaborate joke, or weird science experiment; I'm pretty sure they haven't gotten 'Cat Subjects' approval.

I could go for a snack. Shake magic can. Shake.

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Hi Dad and Mom,

I was wondering what all of the excitement was yesterday and overheard my foster mom and foster sister saying it was your birthday. My birthday was earlier this week.

Well, everyone celebrated YOUR birthday but foster mom just gave me extra treats for MY birthday. I wasn't very impressed with all the noise and smoke and other weird smells. To tell the truth, I hid under the bed for a while. I'm glad everyone likes you and wants to celebrate but next year when we're in Iowa can we be a bit more reserved?

Are you coming home soon?

Miss you. Gotta go, she's home

A Belated Birthday

I could write a post about our crazy time in Bologna and the very strange museums we saw there (which I will eventually, because it was too good, but may need to wait til I can upload pictures). Or I could write about coming to Milan and visiting my cousin Emanuela and her boyfriend Guido (which has been wonderful). Or even about what we will be doing over our next 3 weeks here (not really sure, but we think it involves the Dolomites and Venice).

But instead, I'll let you all know that yesterday was Miles' birthday. We don't know that it was actually his birthday, but we adopted him one year ago yesterday. Hopefully he got a treat or goo dpetting in Portland, but we thought it would be weird if we called him for his birthday, as he doesn't talk or anything (and this post is probably weird enough).

So anyways, Happy Birthday cat.

How I Spend My Days

Did you know that baby birds hatch from eggs?

FROM EGGS!!!!

Unbelievable that something so cute and tasty looking could come from something so boring looking and not-tasty. Anyways, while those two 'owners' of mine are out backpacking around Italy, I've found me a new hobby: watching these silly little birds have new chicks under the deck.

Sometimes Ben and Jerry like to come out and watch with me, but they're not as interested; they roll to their own beat.

This is so cool. I can't wait til they try to fly. Who knows what will happen then?!?!?!?!? Maybe they'll fly!?! Maybe they'll fall!?! Maybe we'll get a snack!?! Who knows. All I know is that the anticipation is killing me (Hm, maybe a new saying: 'Anticipation killed the cat.' I'll have to work on that one).

Back to that Ben and Jerry. Turns out they're not so bad. Once Tiger-stripe over here realized I wasn't going to be taking over, he chilled out. Jerry even caught a bird on the deck and brought it inside. He's got cat-like reflexes (hahahahahahahahahahahahaha - I am hysterical).

The woman who lives here came home. She said she saw those other two and they send their love. But she also told me they've been galavanting all over Europe with new and different cats, even threatening to replace me.

I'm not sure if I should believe her, but I'll be sure to give those 2 a good sniffing when they back. I kind of miss them.

Peace out.

Got Snuggles?

So apparently, they're gone. :( I haven't seen them in almost a week. Sorry if I'm a little sad today, but it's hard to type through the tears.

I guess they are on their way to Europe and will come back eventually. I guess I'm spending the next couple of months with my 'friends' Ben and Jerry. Some friends these guys are: the growling and hissing has calmed down, but now they knock over my food because they think it's funny. Ha Ha Ha, my stomach hurts from laughing so hard.

So sad.

Anyways, since Kimberly isn't here for the snuggling, I had to find someone new to steal snuggles from. I don't know who this guy is, but he seems sufficient for snuggling purposes, even though he is a Mets fan (I hope PEter doesn't get too mad about that).

Guess Who's Back...

...It’s the M-I-L, E to the S,
The rockin' Russian Blue who loves you best

Hey there everyone, it’s been a while since I’ve checked in, and boy, have I had some crazy adventures. I’m a little discombobulated these days (how’s that for a big-cat word) (it took me about 30 seconds to type it though, damn paws without opposable thumbs), but we’ll get to that in a second.

So the best place to start is probably a few weeks back. I had been helping Kimberly with her thesis. She may have had all the “ideas” and done all the “typing,” but I basically wrote the thing for her: you know what they say, behind every good woman, is a cat. I’d have to agree whole-heartedly.

Then one day, these two decided to take me for a car ride. I try to tell them over and over again that I don’t want to go in the car: I wail incessantly, I throw up on the rug, I wake them at 5 a.m. They really need to learn Cat-alonian if this whole relationship is going to work out.

Anyways, they think they’re so slick, trying to trick me into getting into the Box, but I know what they’re doing. If there wasn’t two of them, I wouldn’t have gotten in, but they over-powered me. It’s not so much the car that’s the problem, it’s that dam Box, it keeps closing in on me. Once we were in the car, I really turned on the wailing and gave Kimberly the Puss-in-Boots eyes; I really turned it on. She eventually relented, and I was free to burrow under the seats. Ah the safety of darkness.

I figured we were heading down to that nice old woman’s house; I think they called her Grandmama. She was nice, giving me treats and lots of petting, kind of like a spa treatment. But no, we ended up at some strange house where everything was a little suspicious. There was a weird scent in the air. Once I got in, it was obvious: new friends.

Ben and Jerry seemed like nice enough cats, but they were not happy to see me. Hiss, growl, hiss hiss hiss. That Ben, he needs to chill out. Jerry seemed cool, but Ben was all freaking, so I couldn’t really get to know him.

I figured the best way to avoid showing him who was boss and giving him a swipe to the head was to hide under the couch for a while; I wouldn’t want to embarrass someone in their own house. But we all know I could have. I was happy when Kimberly got me out from the couch and gave me some treats. I was really happy when we left that place and the ominous, terrible smells of Ben and Jerry.

Things were back to normal at home for a while, as I settled back into my cycle of eating, sleeping, and whining. But boxes kept showing up and things slowly started disappearing. Something was up.

My fears were confirmed when they drugged me. Yup, my so-called caretakers gave me tranquilizers, and as far as I can tell, it was all a cruel joke. I almost fell off the window, couldn’t eat, and was constipated for days. Don’t get me wrong, the semi-comatose sleep and melting walls were pretty cool, but the hangover was killer. I still have no idea why they would do that to me. Maybe not enough wailing and whining?

When I finally recovered from my haze, half the house was missing and the boxes had grown and covered half the house. Now something was definitely up.

I tried laying low for a while until I could figure things out. I even cut back on the whining and increased the sleeping and eating. Then out of nowhere, we were back in the car again. They had grabbed my lead and harness, so I figured we were going outside for a nice afternoon of chewing on grass and vomiting on the bed. But they tricked me, again. I’m really gonna get them.

We ended up back at Ben and Jerry’s house – I could tell as soon as I smelled them. When I got inside, though, they were no where to be found. That was cool. I wandered around, checked out the scene, scratched the post for a while. This place wasn’t so bad; lots of space, lots of windows to look out, lots of dark hiding places.

Then out of nowhere was Jerry, all by himself. Cool. Hey buddy. He gave me the old submissive move, rolling onto his back and showing me his belly, sniffing my butt. Like I said, this Jerry is pretty cool. We’ve been getting along pretty well, sleeping and eating like old buddies.

But Ben, he’s one uptight cat. Hiss hiss hiss. Growl growl growl. All day long. I try to walk down the hall and get a little shut-eye – hiss. I need to use the litter box – growl. I understand it’s your place, I’m cool with that. It’s not like I want to live here. I just want to be friends, ok.

Well, Ben isn’t getting the message. I’ve had to slap him around a little bit the last couple days. And I feel bad about it, you know. It’s his house, his brother. But really, if you’re going to keep disrespecting me, I’m going to have to start laying down the law more often and show you how the food chain works. I don’t want it to go down this way – like I said, lets be friends, sniff a little butt together – but if I have to, I will give you a swipe.

I’ve actually been over here for a few days now, claiming my spaces, checking out the lay of the land. Kimberly and Peter were here the past couple nights; I guess we’re all moving to this place. That’s cool. They just left a little while ago, carrying some bags. It looks like they’re still moving some things around.

I can’t wait until they get home from work and we can snuggle. Just like old times.

Things I'll Miss About Oregon: Volume 9 [Our Aquarium Community]

Tonight, we passed our fish tank community on to their new caretakers, the Southerners.

Although the tank wasn't the same the last few months, what with most of the fish dieing off, both rapidly and of old age, it will be missed. It looks so sad in that picture, but I promise, it was really exciting. Really.

Someday, I think I'd like to get a big 50-gallon tank, maybe with a salt water community. But Kimberly keeps giving me a look. You know the look, you probably got it from your principal or mom once. The "NO" look. I don't think I'm getting the big tank anytime soon. :(

With Kimberly's thesis odyssey coming to an end and me quitting my job, who would have thought that the giving away of our aquarium would be the thing that makes it feel like this whole vacation and move might actually happen.

Allow Myself to Introduce...Myself

Hi there. Miles - 'the russian blue with little to do' - signing on.

My owners, Kimberly and PEter (what’s up with that spelling? It’s called spellchecker, use it) (and I like to call them Petme and Feedme, respectively), have asked me to write a 'who I am' post to this little 'blog' thing they’re trying out. A few funny things about that: (1) they think they own me (you have no idea how funny that is – those suckers. Why don’t you feed me some more, or else I might whine all night and keep you up, hahahahahahahahahahaha!); (2) I have no idea what a blog is; and (3) the only thing I’ve ever used a computer for is to look at kitty porn (that’s a terrible joke, but hey, I’m a cat – my brain is the size of an acorn).

So anyways, who is Miles? First of all, I’m a cat, duh. I get freaked out by loud noises. And too much light. And movement.

My favorite things to do are snuggle and sleep – Kimberly and I get along really well. Peter calls us snugglesluts. If you had any idea how traumatic my day-to-day existence is, you’d sleep a lot too. He’s just jealous.

Sometimes I like to lick paper. I don’t know what you humans put in that stuff – cat nip or scent of cat's butt or whatever – but boy does it taste good. I also like to lick moldy walls. And sometimes the floor.

I get my water primarily from licking the condensation on the windows and the dripping faucet in the bathroom. That filtered water they give me in the crystal glass is for snobs. I'm a cat of the people - I’ll take mine moldy or dusty please.

My mortal enemies are the fancy white cat from next door and the grey tiger stripped cat from down the street (I've nicknamed them Snowball and Montecore). I’d mess those cats up…if they let me outside – the outdoors doesn’t agree with me. And I have no claws. My old family really was crap: pulled out my claws, gave me the old ‘snip-snip’ down below, made me crap in a box on the porch (which, if you’ve ever spent a winter in Orygun, isn’t as cool as it sounds). As boring as these two suckers are, at least they don’t lock me in the closet.

But sometimes Kimberly lets me go outside on a lead (it’s the King’s English, alright – my Owner-in-Sister-in-Law taught me that, and I think it sounds refined, thank you very much). That’s fun because I get to eat grass; then as soon as I get inside, I puke on the rug – like I said, these two are suckers. But it’s cool outside – I get to mark my territory and pounce around a little, like a real cat and everything. And those stupid ‘outdoor’ cats don’t mess with me, nope, not with Kimberly watching my back.

I like to chase string – it's so mesmerizing when it flies back and forth. Sometimes I like to chase balls of paper and play fetch. The one thing I won’t chase – mice. Not worth it. Plus, they might have claws or sharp teeth, which could really hurt.

Anyways, Kimberly and Peter keep talking about some changes, and how while they’re away, I’ll have to keep in touch through this blog with the help of Sister-the-Youngest. I’m not sure what exactly they’re talking about (I have noticed a lot of empty wine bottles lately, so I think they’ve been hitting it a little hard lately), but I’m pretty sure we’re not going anywhere. Who would I snuggle with? Major changes might make me whine the entire time (here's a good thought: maybe I'll whine all the time no matter what. Done and done); especially if that stupid car were involved. But even these two suckers aren’t dumb enough to make me get back into that thing.

Well, that's a little about me, Miles. If you need any advice with the ladies, or want to know anything else about how wonderful I am, just leave me a comment down below and I'll see what I can do. I have a feeling Petme and Feedme are going to be jealous of how popular my posts are and not let me do this that often.

Until next time, Keep on Snugglin’!

here's a little story about a cat named miles

Here in Beertown, it was around 55 and sunny yesterday. People were out all over the place, walking the dog, walking the kid, playing hopscotch, pushing a wooden hoop down the street, etc; I even played catch with The Don during an afternoon break. And since it was supposed to be raining and 40's, it was a very nice surprise. The Fake Spring here in the Northwest is a glorious thing.

It was supposed to be rainy again today, the typical NW March weather; however, on the radio, they were saying sunny and 60. FAKE SPRING RULES!!!

So, with that back story, here's a little story about our cat, as previously told to Kimberly over Skype:

[8:16:12 AM] Peter says: i decided to open the drapes in the bedroom, since its so nice and all...

[8:16:21 AM] Peter says: miles was very excited while i was doing so, he's even doing the butt dance...

[8:16:42 AM] Peter says: he immediately jumped on the middle window pane so he could watch all the goings on outside...

[8:17:03 AM] Peter says: but the window was covered with condensation...

[8:17:14 AM] Peter says: so what does our hero miles do...?

[8:17:24 AM] Peter says: but of course, he licks the water off...

[8:17:34 AM] Peter says: and in the process solves 2 problems...

[8:17:42 AM] Peter says: his insatiable thirst...

[8:17:49 AM] Peter says: and his ability to see the outdoors

That pretty much sums up Miles. He not only licks things, he licks very strange things.

Fun with Cats

As mentioned before, here and here, we have a lovely cat Miles. Miles is pretty special (in the good way). This isn't me being blinded with love- EVERYONE who meets him seems to fall instantly in love. From the cousins during his first weekend at our house, to Peter's boss' son, my Mom, Grandmama, even our landlord who isn't crazy about cats likes Miles.

The thing is... we're beginning to wonder whether his niceness is all an act.

You see, we adopted dear Miles from the Oregon Humane Society. His papers from there state that he was in his first home for about a year, then in his second for about 2 before they dropped him off at the shelter. Reason for getting rid of him "he's boring." Yep, you read that right, he's a cat and yet they were upset that he "slept too much."

So we met him at the shelter, the people brought him to us in our little waiting room and he proceeded to rub our legs then jump up on the bench between us, purr and drool a bit on Peter's knee. Needless to say, we were smitten.

And we've been in love ever since.

However.
Miles has decided on a new line of behavior that's causing some issues. He likes to wake up at 5 am. Me- I don't really like to wake up at all, but if I have to, particularly NOT at 5. Now, if he just got up and went about his business, that'd be fine. Instead, he sharpens his little declawed paws on the laundry basket, attacks feet, licks my books (his fascination for paper is a different tale for another time), bangs his head against Peter, and cries the wail of the unloved.

Possible reasons for cat distress
1. hungry
2. litter box full
3. thirsty
4. bored?

Cat has food, water, clean box, and toys scattered throughout the house. Yet, he just wants us to be awake with him! So much love, so much togetherness, so clingy.

So we're beginning to wonder... did those people who gave him away lie on the intake form? Was he really just crazy clingy and it took 2 years for them to see it (as it's taken us 7 months?) Maybe they just put "boring" on his form to try to lure another family into adopting him?

well... we got him, now we have to figure out how not to strangle him!

what the hell is wrong with our fish tank?

As Kimbely eloquently wrote, 2007 is starting off much better than our somewhat tumultuous '06 (ok, so it wasn't so much tumultuous as downright crappy). One of the minor inconveniences we experienced in '06 was the rapid demise of our fish tank "community." Our tank was struggling along with 2 albino cory catfish, a neon tetra or 2, a barb thing, a clown loach, a rubber lip pleco, a couple random shrimp that we got with our live plants, and Mortimer, our african-dwarf frog. And to top it off, the water was white and cloudy and we couldn't figure out why.

Needless to say, it was a little depressing.

So, it being 2007 and a new year and all, we decided to repopulate, cloudy water be damned. We went to the store; we got us 5 new neon tetras and 2 new angel fish. We came home and dutifully floated them in the tank until they were acclimated.

And then we noticed old rubber lips was missing. Not dead and floating on the top, or in a plant, or even bits of him in the filter. Just gone. A bad sign, it I ever there was one. And if there's one thing Mr Smith taught me in Latin, it's that you can't avoid an oracle (see: Oedipus Rex for example A, and the Trojan War for Exhibit B, and yes, I know those are Greek myths, but the Romans stole everything else from Greece, so).

We released the 2 angels and the tetras, and everyone is looking good. A week goes by and everyone seems to be fitting in well: the angels are taking over the top of the tank, the tetras are settling into the middle bottom, the corys take the bottom, and the loach is in the filter. Even the tank is clearing up.

Then the problems began. The angel fish were doing back flips and spins. Although these are natural movements for the Millennium Falcon or even a Metzger, this is not a natural fish swimming style. First, the white one with the black stripes went: it was sad seeing her go down the drain the same way she spent her final hours. Then the black angel, with the white tiger stripes: he went more peacefully as we slept.

We've decided we're bad fish parents and are holding off on getting anymore large fish. It's too taxing, both mentally and financially. Maybe someday we'll try again, but more than likely we'll pawn the whole community off on someone in the near future as we prepare our move. After all, there is no water in the middle.

miles for Miles

Well, Miles is finally living up to his name with a recent roadtrip to Albany.

Miles headed out on his inaugural road trip accompanied by Kimberly and Sissy. The whole crew drove down to Albany to visit Grandmama. Miles is undecided about road travel. Although he likes getting to hang out with people, the whole moving vehicle thing seems slightly overrated. His preferred place seems to be wedged under the driver's seat...

But, at least he was relatively quiet, things are looking up for the cross-country drive!

AND, more importantly, he was a smash hit with Grandmama. She offered to keep him, suggested that we forget to take him home, and generally gushed about how fabulous he is. How right she is!

Well, there are a lot more miles in Miles' future.

Oh my... the death continues

Well, the saga of the fish community gets sadder and sadder. Alas, during a water change last week, several more fish died. They fought hard, and swam upside down for a while, but eventually succumbed.

We are sadded by the continuing loss in the tank. It's pretty lonely in there...

12 December 2006

sleeping with the fishes

alas, one of the fishes is no longer. Angelfish had been looking funny for a few days, but seemed to be better. I guess "better" was an illusion. This morning she was face down in the gravel, not moving or breathing. So sad.

She was a good angelfish . She laid lots of eggs and jealously guarded them, until she ate them. She liked to nip at the frog. She was very pretty, lots of orange and black and silver. She was the alpha-female of the tank.

I will miss watching her.

I wish things wouldn't die.

[Edit 4:34 p.m.: Not a good day for the fish tank community: our dear, super aggressive, "kill-all-the-other-pretty-fish" black fan tail guppy was found face first in the plants this afternoon. He was only with us a short time, but his killing of most of our other small fish will live on in our memories - PEter]

[Edit 12/13 12:10 p.m.: So the black fan tail was a guppy, not a tetra; and a he, not a she - PEter ]

the other stuck one

Meet the 3rd stuck one...

Miles.

He is so _not_ excited about the impending move to the middle. About the only thing he hates in life is having to go into his crate.
